Self-Massage as a Cellulite Treatment

By Deborah G Hutton

Due to the shape of a woman's body their hips, stomachs and thighs are often susceptible to fat deposits. Some of these deposits exist just below the skin and it is this that causes the dimpling of the skin called cellulite. Because of its unsightly appearance many women are horrified about the condition and particularly would do anything to get rid of cellulite.

There are hundreds of treatments available that claim to reduce cellulite. One such treatment is massage. This treatment is thought to help to reduce cellulite by smoothing out the fat and increasing blood circulation to the problem areas.

You can have cellulite massage done in a beauty spa or you can do it yourself at home. There are machines available that can help either the beauty therapist or yourself at home to accomplish the task. Self-massage in the home environment is the cheapest method and can provide effective treatment for cellulite reduction. You can also use the massage combined with other treatments including laser, radio waves, creams or body wraps.

The first step to cellulite self-massage is to look at what massage oil you will use. You can purchase massage oils that are believed to help the fat loss under the skin. Your local supply of natural oils will be able to tell you more.

If you have cellulite on your hips or abdomen / stomach you should use two hands. You want a kneading-type motion where you lift up the skin and cellulite with one hand and then drop it into the other. Make sure you are gentle.

One you have finished the kneading process it is time now to start doing circular-type motions across the problem areas. Try to do clockwise motions because this is the way your digestive system naturally moves. If you are pregnant or planning on being it is recommended that you don't massage your abdomen as there is risk you may hurt the baby.

If you have cellulite on your thighs as most women do, start at the knee and use a long stroking motion upwards. Also use the same stroke with the area behind the knees and back thighs.

Also switch to a kneading-like motion once you have done enough of the long strokes.

Cellulite self-massage is best combined with other treatments. Cost effective treatments can include increasing your intake of water, undergoing a weight loss diet and more cardio and weight bearing exercise. You can also use a loofah sponge to rub the affected areas during a bath or shower to improve skin circulation and massage the fat deposits.

For a more intensive cellulite massage treatment you should investigate a home massage machine or ask your local health and beauty spa whether they have a specialized machine available to their customers. - 15438
