Why Percussive Massage Devices Beat Muscle Therapy

By Chris Channing

When we use the term percussive massage, we are referring to a type of massage that is going to target deep-down tissue as compared to tissue above it. This type of massage can be very relaxing, aid back pain relief, and can prove to have many benefits over a regular massage. Even better, devices can be used to replace a costly masseuse.

Percussive massages differ from other types of massages in the fact that they are sometimes more rough, in order to get down to a deeper tissue. Some techniques may be named "pummel" or "pinch," but they are actually quite enjoyable if they are done correctly. Some methods may apply some discomfort, but only briefly and the overall process is quite relaxing.

From the techniques described, it would seem that a true health professional skilled in massage therapy would be needed. After all, not too many people would trust a machine to "gently" pinch muscles of the body with the finesse a massage therapist would. However, models on the market today such as the TheraSpa or Thumper brands are able to give deep-tissue massages while still being gentle to the recipient. And to one up the massage therapist, the devices cost much less money in the long run.

Percussive massage units are usually heavy in weight. This is because they need to use their weight to get down into the deeper tissue of the body. Because this is true, sometimes it means that a second person is required in order to use the machine on areas such as the back. Seeing this problem, some manufacturers have made smaller models that can be used by a single person, although they are typically less powerful.

If you are using the massage for relieving back pain, one recommendation is to use some sort of heating element in order to get the maximum benefit of the device. Check with the owner's manual to see if you can use a lotion that has heating elements in it with the device. Also be on the lookout for a device that may emit heat on its one, acting like a heating pad for the area in which back pain is being exhibited.

Even with the proper equipment obtained in order to receive the right percussive massage, tips may be required in using it effectively. Read through the instructions included in the product- missing vital instructions may result in injury or misuse. A professional massage therapist may also give out some free advice if asked nicely in regards to techniques to follow.
