Handling Herniated Disc

By Dr. Randall Pruitt

For people that are suffering from herniated discs, there are several different approaches that are available when it comes to treating these types of problems. This means that the approach to treatment that will be best for you will depend on your exact conditions and previous medical history. In order to figure out the best route for recovery, there are many different things that you are going to want to consider.

The first step in dealing with herniated disc is to consult your doctor. Communicate with your doctor about your overall condition, the level of pain you are experiencing. Doctors will provide the utmost care and help you choose the best mode of treatment you are comfortable with.

Most doctors or medical health professionals recommends going thru a non-invasive treatment. Surgery is usually the last option. Doctors prefer alternative methods because it can eliminate pain associated with herniated discs.

There are a lot of available alternative methods of treatment for herniated disc aside from surgery. Doctors recommend surgery for patients if the pain is increasing and there are muscle weakness or other side effects.

When it comes to non-surgical treatment, the first step of recovery is usually done by means of bed rest and over the counter medications such as ibuprofen. The medication is used to reduce the pain while the bed rest helps to start the healing process. There may also be muscle relaxants for people that are experiencing side affects of the herniated discs such as back spasms. Whether or not you will be able to benefit from these non-surgical procedures is something that will be completely up to your current condition. Many doctors will recommend that you at the very least attempt non surgical procedures. However you will quickly figure out whether or not this is something that is right for you.

If you are having any second thoughts about your decision to avoid surgical methods of treatment, the best thing to do is to contact your doctor or medical health professional immediately. This applies to people that are attempting non-surgical methods of treatment and are unable to stand the pain. Your doctor may suggest stronger methods of painkilling and or surgical procedures that are recommended for herniated discs. Its always best to find out what your options are before your pain becomes worse. - 15438
