Ketones ( the byproducts of burning fat) suppress the appetite, because of the high protein nature of the diet, reducing spontaneous food intake. Although people are allowed to eat as much as they like, they are eating a fewer calories because they no longer feel as hungry.

When you have less carbohydrates you have less insulin and therefore produce less new fat.

Insulin controls or regulates the sugar movement from food into the cells of the body where it is consume for energy or stored as fat. Excessive production of insulin from eating high amounts of carbohydrates leads to a steady reduction in the sensitivity of the cells to insulin which leads to the body having to produce more and more insulin to achieve the same job .

During this phase, you would be able to understand the optimum level of carbohydrates required to take off excess weight. Followers of the Atkins diet tips will use "Ketostix" strips (available from a chemist or health store) to detect when their body is in a state of Ketosis.
